The earliest known Gemstone Jewelry was produced by Neanderthals. Archaeological finds unearthed in southeast Spain's Cueva de los Aviones cave provide evidence for this. The shells have little holes in them. Archaeologists discovered that hematite, a type of red gemstone, was originally set into these tiny holes.
